Kathy Lieu
UC Davis
"My family and community play a great role in my life because they encourage me to do my best and work my hardest, but also remind me of my own responsibility to give back. I grew up in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, which has one of the highest crime rates in the city… As I take on more responsibilities in life, I have learned that determination and following through with my commitments is key to being an adult; others depend on me and it is my job to fulfill my goals. These goals, however, are a product of my own experience, and I realize that after receiving so much help from others, I feel a responsibility to do the same."
Partnerships
Meritus partners with organizations to ensure that we connect to those working with youth at all levels. Supporting students as they transition to college is the next stage of their personal development and educational commitment. Meritus completes the circle for youth development.
Community Partners: College Bound Network
In October 2004, Meritus became a founding member of the Bay Area College Bound Network (CBN). CBN is a network of Bay Area organizations providing financial and programmatic support to low-income, college bound youth as early as elementary school. Its members share information on best practices and innovative approaches to more effectively serve students and families and ensure their success in pursuit of a college education. CBN is a model of collaboration in support of our students and each other.

San Francisco Unified School District
Thanks to the wonderful counselors and principals of San Francisco's public school district, students at each district high school receive information and encouragement to apply for the Meritus scholarships. Meritus prepares presentations about Meritus' guidelines and selection process every fall of the academic school year for counselors. They are a crucial part of the application process, encouraging high potential students to apply and distributing copies of the application. The Meritus Board of Directors is proud to have constant representation from the School District in the participation of one high school principal and the Assistant Superintendent for High Schools.
